IP has just announced an annual art prize, Prêmio Investidor Profissional de Arte (PIPA) in a pioneering partnership with MAM-Rio, Rio de Janeiro’s modern art museum. Roughly translating from PIPA’s website, the idea is to stimulate and recognize emerging artists with a relevant cash award and, in line with IP’s global view, an international residence program – all the while stimulating MAM-Rio’s continuous improvement efforts and the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Update (April 14th, 2010): O Globo newspaper has kindly authorized that we use this PDF version of their story!

Selected details:

Awards: The main prize winner takes home R$ 100,000.00 (R$ 75,000 in cash and R$ 25,000 for the international internship program), while the Public’s Choice winner gets R$ 20,000.00 in cash. If the same artist wins both he accumulates the awards.

The selection process: A Board of 5 to 7 members will choose approx. 30 “indicators” among artists, art dealers, curators, gallery owners and art critics to nominate up to 5 artists each. The Board will then choose 4 finalists who will have the opportunity to exhibit their works at MAM-Rio for a period. During this exhibit the public can vote for their favorite artist to win the Public’s Choice award. The Board will announce both prize winners by the end of October.
